Health Nexus Latrobe – Proposed Health & Wellbeing Precinct
The Vision
To create a one-stop, community-based health and wellbeing precinct that brings high-quality primary care, allied health services and affordable seniors’ housing to Latrobe and the wider Mersey region—improving access, reducing hospital admissions
and training the next generation of rural clinicians.
The Need
- GP wait times in the North-West exceed the Tasmanian average by up to five weeks.
- Residents aged 65+ make up 22 % of Latrobe’s population and are projected to grow by 32 % in the next decade.
- Many low-income seniors travel 30 km+ to see multiple providers, leading to fragmented care and preventable ED visits.
Project Scope (Stage 1)
Economic & Social Benefit
- Construction jobs: 60 FTE over 18 months; ongoing roles: 40 clinical/support staff.
- Health system savings: projected 12% drop in non-urgent ED presentations within three years.
- Local procurement: >70% of build cost directed to North-West contractors and suppliers.
- Training pipeline: Retains junior doctors locally, addressing regional GP shortages.
