Men’s Health GP in Launceston

Men's health consultation at Health Nexus Launceston

Most men come in late. A men's health appointment is a straightforward way to get the numbers checked, ask the question you have been putting off, and leave with a plan. Male doctors are available – ask reception when you book.

What we can help with

  • Heart health checks – blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes risk
  • Prostate health, including a proper discussion of PSA testing and what the result would mean
  • Urinary symptoms – getting up at night, a slow stream, urgency
  • Erectile difficulties and low libido
  • Sexual health, including sexually transmitted infection testing
  • Mental health – stress, low mood, anger, sleep and alcohol
  • Weight, exercise, alcohol and smoking
  • Work-related injuries and WorkCover
  • Skin checks, bowel screening and other preventive care

What to expect

Book a long appointment for a general men’s health check and say what it is about when you book, so enough time is set aside. Bring a list of your medicines, and any family history you know of – heart disease, diabetes, prostate or bowel cancer. Most of the checks are a conversation, an examination, blood pressure and a blood test form you can fill in downstairs at the pathology collection room on your way out.

Mental health

Men’s mental health is part of a men’s health appointment, not a separate conversation. Every doctor who works from Health Nexus can prepare a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan, which gives Medicare-rebated access to a psychologist – see mental health care.

Fees and Medicare

Health Nexus Launceston is a mixed-billing practice. Children aged 12 and under are bulk billed whenever the practice is open, including evenings and weekends. Pension card holders over 65 and DVA Gold Card holders are bulk billed on weekdays between 8am and 5pm. Everyone else pays the consultation fee with the Medicare rebate claimed on the spot. The current fees are on the fees and bulk billing page.

The practice is open 8am–8pm Monday to Friday, 8am–5pm Saturday and 9am–5pm Sunday, every day of the year, and on every public holiday at the standard hours for that day.

Common questions

What are the main things a men's health check covers?

Blood pressure, weight, cholesterol and diabetes risk, mental health, alcohol and smoking, plus a discussion of prostate and bowel screening based on your age and family history.

Can I see a male doctor?

Yes. Several male doctors work from Health Nexus – tell reception when you book.

Do you discuss erectile difficulties?

Yes, and it is a common reason to come in. It is also worth checking, because it can be an early sign of heart or blood-vessel disease. Treatment options are discussed with you at the consultation.

How often should I have a check?

It depends on your age, your family history and what turns up. Your doctor will tell you when to come back – for many men it is every one to two years.

Do I need a referral?

No. Book a GP appointment directly, online or by phone.
